Restoring Notre-Dame: An Immersive Look at Heritage Conservation

This year, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi organized a scientific conference and immersive exhibition that gave participants the unique opportunity to engage with the restoration journey of the historical Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.

The event began with an immersive exhibition featuring a virtual reality tour, 3D hologram display of the cathedral’s historic décor, and a photographic series by Patrick Zachmann that captured the restoration process. The experience offered visitors a rare, up-close view of Notre-Dame’s resilience and historical importance.

The accompanying scientific conference gathered experts from the Notre-Dame restoration project, Ministry of Culture conservators, archaeologists, and researchers, who discussed restoration methods and innovations. They spoke about digital tools for heritage conservation, and highlighted parallel conservation projects in progress in the Arabian Peninsula. This cross-disciplinary exchange provided attendees with deep insights into the cultural, technical, and historical dimensions of restoration, highlighting future perspectives for global heritage conservation.
