NeurIPS@Paris: a Major Event in Machine Learning Research
On December 4 and 5, NeurIPS@Paris 2024 saw the machine learning community come together at SCAI (Sorbonne Center for Artificial Intelligence.) The event, organized ahead of the international NeurIPS conference, has become an important event in France for the machine learning (ML) research community.
Diverse research subjects
More than 300 participants from leading public and private institutions, such as Inria, the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, Sorbonne University; alongside industrial giants such as Google, Apple, Meta, and Google DeepMind, attended this event. European researchers, representing prestigious institutions such as EPFL, KTH and UCL, were also present, reinforcing the international dimension of the meeting.
At the heart of the event, 100 articles published at NeurIPS 2024, a world reference in the field of ML, were exhibited. Some, chosen on the basis of criteria of scientific quality and diversity, were also the subject of oral presentations.
Over these two days, a wide variety of topics, reflecting the vitality of ML research, were addressed, such as the ethical and social aspects of machine learning, advanced theory and methods, deep learning, generative models and Large Language Models, and reinforcement learning.
“In just a few years, the NeurIPS@Paris conference has established itself as a highlight of the French machine learning community. In four years, the number of participants has more than tripled!” Said Gérard Biau, Director of SCAI.
A gateway to Europe
Organized by eight doctoral students, the NeurIPS@Paris event stood out for its human focus, promoting exchanges between academic and industrial research fields. The success of previous editions, which brought together around 250 participants, was amplified this year thanks to support from private partners, such as Apple, Bioptimus, Critéo, Owkin, and Probabl. "Bioptimus is proud to contribute to this event, which demonstrates the dynamism of the machine learning community in France and Europe," reflected Jean-Philippe Vert, President of Bioptimus.
NeurIPS@Paris 2024 has established itself as a key lever for promoting the work of the French and European ML community, while providing a framework conducive to reflections about the ethical and sustainable issues of artificial intelligence.
