Mission Bougainville: "It's the ideal opportunity to apply my knowledge at sea!"

Lucien, 23 yrs old, holds a Master's degree in Biology, Ecology and Evolution, and is a member of the new Bougainville Mission class. He tells us about his background, why he applied, the challenges he expects to face and how this unique mission will contribute to his personal and professional development.

Lucien will be posted to Tahiti along with Émilie.

Can you tell us about your background?
Lucien:
JI've just finished my Master’s degree in Biology, Ecology and Evolution, with a specialization in Microbiology, Environment and Health, at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle. I obtained my bachelor's degree in biology at the Université Paris-Saclay, and chose this master's program for its specific focus on the study of aquatic microorganisms.

What motivated you to apply for the Bougainville Mission?
L.:
I was immediately attracted to the Bougainville Mission's participatory science approach. It represents a unique opportunity to actively participate in scientific research while sharing my passion and knowledge of aquatic microorganisms.

The mission is being carried out in collaboration with the French Navy. What do you expect from this unique experience of working on board Navy ships?
L.:

How are you preparing to take on scientific responsibilities with full autonomy during the mission?
L.:
Autonomy is one aspect of the mission that particularly motivates me. Scientific training at Sorbonne University's marine stations in Banyuls-sur-Mer and Villefranche-sur-Mer has enabled me to familiarize myself with sampling protocols and use scientific tools such as the Planktoscope and Lamprey. These practical experiences have given me confidence in the scientific responsibilities I'll be taking on during the course of the mission.

What challenges do you foresee during this mission and how do you plan to overcome them?
L.:
It will give me invaluable field experience, an essential skill often lacking in Masters courses. It's an ideal opportunity to apply my knowledge at sea!

On a personal level, it will help reinforce my autonomy thanks to the responsibilities entrusted to me.

How do you think this assignment will enrich your career and personal development?
L.:

What skills do you hope to acquire or develop during this assignment?
L.:
I hope to acquire skills in fieldwork and scientific communication. Mediation is an important part of this mission, and I'd like to get actively involved, whether it's with schoolchildren in Papeete or sailors at sea?

Have you ever thought about what you might do after Bougainville?
L.:
I plan to continue with a research thesis, potentially directly related to the mission, or on subjects focused on planktonic organisms.
