Gérard Biau, Director of SCAI, has been elected to the French Academy of Sciences

Gérard Biau, professor of statistics at Sorbonne University and director of the Sorbonne Center for Artificial Intelligence (SCAI), has been elected to the prestigious French Academy of Sciences. This recognition highlights his remarkable scientific career and ongoing dedication to the academic community.

Since 2007, Gérard Biau has been a professor at the Laboratory of Probability, Statistics, and Modeling (LPSM), a joint research unit of Sorbonne University, CNRS, and Université Paris Cité. His expertise lies in statistics and machine learning.

In 2018, following the creation of Sorbonne University, he was appointed to lead an internal task force to organize the institution’s artificial intelligence activities in alignment with France’s national AI strategy. This initiative led to the establishment of SCAI in June 2019, a center fully dedicated to artificial intelligence. Within a few years, SCAI has become a key player at Sorbonne University, drawing on the expertise of its various science, humanities, and medical faculties, as well as the broader Sorbonne University Alliance.

"Being elected to the French Academy of Sciences is a tremendous honor and a great responsibility," says Gérard Biau. "It is a recognition of the scientific work I have conducted over the years, but also a celebration of the collaborations, teams, and institutions I have been fortunate to work with. For me, it is a unique opportunity to further contribute to the promotion of science, the sharing of knowledge, and addressing the major challenges of our time."

Sorbonne University congratulates Gérard Biau on his election to the Academy. The institution is dedicated to advancing scientific progress and its applications, awarding nearly 80 annual prizes across various fields, from fundamental to applied sciences.

A closer look at his journey

A graduate of École des Mines de Paris and a holder of the agrégation in mathematics, Gérard Biau earned his PhD from the University of Montpellier in 2000. He began his career as a lecturer at Sorbonne University from 2001 to 2004. After completing his Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR), he was appointed professor at the University of Montpellier. In 2007, he joined the Laboratory of Probability, Statistics, and Modeling at Sorbonne University, where he remains today as the director and a founding member of SCAI.

Gérard Biau's research focuses on analyzing the statistical mechanisms underpinning modern AI algorithms. His recent contributions explore the convergence between physical modeling and machine learning to harness their combined potential.

A junior member of the Institut Universitaire de France from 2012 to 2017, he served as president of the French Statistical Society from 2015 to 2018. In 2018, he received the Michel Monpetit Prize from Inria, awarded by the Academy of Sciences. Since 2024, he has been a senior member of the Institut universitaire de France.
