Lecture 7 - Nicholas H. Steneck

Over the past 30 or so years, different approaches have been taken in response to the assumed problem of misconduct in research, including:  Defining research misconduct, Creating national and/or local offices to deal with research misconduct, Instituting penalties for those who engage in research misconduct, Providing/requiring research integrity (responsible conduct of research) training, Reducing incentives to cheat, Funding research in research integrity, Taking different approaches monitoring, Developing codes of ethics.  
This talk will briefly describe and assess these responses with the goal of evaluating what has been accomplished and exploring whether new approaches are needed.  Special attention will be given to developing in Europe.
 

Nicholas H. Steneck, PhD, is Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Michigan and Director of the Research Ethics and Integrity Program of the Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research. 
Pr. Steneck has studied History, History of Sciences, History of ideas before becoming, in the early 1980s, one of the pioneers to tackle the issue of integrity in research which has ever since become his speciality. Since the 1990s, he has advised many organizations and institutions regarding this topic and has also become a consultant for the American government.
During the early 2000s, Pr Steneck has largely contributed to the creation of the Office of Research Integrity (ORI)/National Institutes of Health Research on Research Integrity Program.
He has notably co-chaired and organized a program of conferences on Research Integrity in the United States from 2000 to 2006 as well as the first ORI World Conference on Research Integrity that took place in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2007. These conferences resulted in him writing in 2004 the ORI Introduction to the Responsible Conduct of Research which has been reedited in 2007. Since then, the 5th World Conference on Research integrity was recently held in Amsterdam and the next one will take place in Honk Kong in 2019.
Pr. Steneck is considered one of the world expert in research integrity. His expertise is highly valued and his participation to conferences is therefore often requested.
In recognition of his work on the history of science and his huge contribution to the field of Research Integrity, he became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1992.
He has recently designed an innovative online course on Epigeum.com in order to help and support young scientists, and especially young researchers to conceive and publish their work with integrity.
