The "Changing Societies" program
To shed light on the transformations of our societies and reflect on their future.
The thematic program
How do societies respond to the changes that affect them? How do they adapt, and to some extent regain control over these changes? How have social groups in different times and places coped with change?
The accelerating pace of change and the growing interconnectedness of the human population are making societies both more vulnerable and more resourceful in the face of far-reaching problems. This includes: the widening scope of inequalities (social, health, climate, gender); the credibility of information and the relationship to scientific truth (in language, images, with the growing impact of digital technology); the management and transmission of legacies (artistic heritage and the resonance of knowledge).
The challenge
To shed light on the real and imagined ideas of the cultural, social, economic and geopolitical transformations of societies through a multidisciplinary approach. To question the future of societies by exploring, on different scales and with different sources, the crises and mutations they are undergoing. Thanks to the hindsight offered by the Humanities, these developments can be put into perspective and placed in a long-term perspective.
The scientific steering
The program is steered by two scientists from a member institution of the Sorbonne University Alliance:
- Juliette Dross is a lecturer in Latin language and literature - researcher in the "Rome and its Renaissance: Art, Archaeology, Literature and Philosophy" research unit - Faculty of Letters, Sorbonne University.
- Caroline Michel d’Annoville is Professor of Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages Archaeology - researcher in the "Orient et Méditerranée" research unit - Faculty of Letters, Sorbonne University.
Their role is to define, propose and implement the program's scientific policy, in close liaison with the other two programs, and in synergy and complementarity with the three faculties of Sorbonne University, the 20 Multidisciplinary Institutes and Initiatives of the Alliance, as well as with all its members.
The binomial is assisted in its action by a scientific committee.
